This article highlights our strong environmental credentials and underpins our pride in our innovative and highly practical technology.

ACTS was approached in 2006 by representatives of the United Nations and Department of Ozone and heritage (Australia) to develop an environmentally safe technology for heat treating timber and other products for phyto-sanitary control.

Phyto-sanitary control basically involves killing insects and pathogens that may be contained by products being shipped from one country or region to another. That is, to avoid some of the catastrophic results we have had in the past from introduced pests and hazards into new environments.

Where industrial scale does not allow for large, high capital cost, carbon-dioxide belching gas kilns to “heat treat” products as a means of killing insects and pathogens, the established process is to treat timber and other products with nasty ozone-depleting methyl bromide gas in a way that trades off one environmental problem for another. Methyl bromide gas is dangerous to humans and even more dangerous to the environment as one of man’s worst ozone-depleting gas inventions.

ACTS has developed the ideal solution; a low cost, solar-heated fully sustainable low energy heat-treatment kiln based on the innovative practical design of our full-specification kiln units. The first prototype unit, purchased by the department of ozone and environment Fiji was trialed in Fiji in May 2007.

Using a single inner layer of plastic bubble wrap black outer cover, an outer clear layer and our patented control airflow system, the plastic covers serve as cladding, absorber and a method of capturing and distributing heat to the process. Simple in nature, this system is expected to create a revolution and make a large impact on the use of methyl bromide gas especially in developing nations.

The Fijian nation intends to use our technology for treatment of pallets, packaging and wood carvings for export. Meetings with leading UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) officials in Fiji indicate a high degree of excitement about the world potential of this product. Results of first trial are encouraging and hybrid and other new features will be tested during August 2007. Austrade export development funding will continue to assist us to continue to “deliver” on this exciting development.

Progress reports have been delivered by Dr Jonathan Banks at a recent world forum in Nairobi so that our contribution to the environment is quickly becoming known to leaders of the world industry who are now familiar with our product and brands.
