Timber Decking

What is the most appropriate type of wood for your timber decking?

There are a number of factors to consider when selecting the timber:

  • What kind of look are you trying to achieve?
  • What timber types fit in with the design of your home?
  • What kind of weight will the decking be expected to carry (ie are you considering a spa or other addition that will require reinforcement)?
  • Can you expect insect damage in your area and should you choose a resilient wood?

Materials

Hardwood is generally preferable to softwood in decking construction as it is not only stronger, more durable and naturally resilient to insect damage, but it often possesses a richer timber hue and is more attractive.

Although hardwood is more expensive its durability means that it will stand the test of time. Popular hardwoods commonly used for decking include Bartu and Jarrah. Staining your hardwood deck regularly with a good quality timber finish (such as decking oil or timber stain) will ensure that your deck lasts. For decking use, hardwood should be kiln-dried.

Softwood such as pine is a cheaper option than hardwood, but it is not as durable and needs to be treated before it is used in timber construction. It should be noted that the wood used for ground posts should be stronger than the timber used for the floor of the deck.

Ground Clearance

Ground clearance is necessary to ensure ventilation for ground posts, and must be higher in termite-prone areas. The building Code of Australia states that all deckings must meet these requirements.

No matter what your decking needs, Choice Timber can advise you on the best timber option.
